“This above all: to thine own self be true” — Shakespeare
It’s amazing how for many people the person the are least honest with is themselves. This can be both with regards to good and bad things. We can convince ourselves that great things which are very possible are out of reach while at the same time we find ourselves constantly breaking commitments we make to ourselves. This can be as small as telling ourselves, we’re not going to eat that, we won’t press snooze on the alarm clock, or won’t waste time surfing the web, but we do. Though small, they are still a broken commitment to ourselves. We do it daily, and rather than acknowledge it — in these cases very small and forgivable failures — we make excuses, we justify and blame. Over time, we we become very good at rationalizing and justifying almost anything. Without realizing it, we are living and believing in our own altered narrative leading to a distorted reality that greatly clouds our clarity and leads to skewed less than ideal decision making with less than ideal outcomes. This greatly impacts our ability to achieve our true goals.
